LETRA DATABASE PROJECT

Preserving Flamenco through the power of technology

LETRA DATABASE PROJECT

Using PocketBase, FAI is teaming up with Stanford University to digitize flamenco lyrics in an effort to preserve the cultural heritage of flamenco. An oral tradition, flamenco lyrics have never been systematically collected, organized, and historicized. The database is searchable by author, theme, historical references, and more. It also includes English translations of the Spanish and Caló (Spanish Roma language) lyrics. Led by Tania Arabelle Flores, this project is community driven, with flamenco artists & scholars from California, New York, and Spain working together to assess preservation protocols in an ever-changing digital landscape.

We believe this international and intergenerational exchange is a crucial component to honoring the legacy of flamenco and maintaining an ethical approach to cultural continuity. The database will be made available online for free, with a public launch planned for 2026.
